Applications of UHMWPE Wear Strips

Nov. 23, 2021

Material handling processes often use machines with many moving parts. Over time, the contact points between moving parts can wear out and cause interruptions to the workflow. Wear strips and components act as sacrificial links in the system to prevent damage to critical components of the equipment.

Wear strips and components are often made of plastics that prevent surface damage and scratches, reduce noise between mating parts and eliminate sliding and sticking between sliding parts.UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) is one of the most commonly used plastic materials for wear strip applications.

As a UHMWPE products supplier, Abosn offers a wide range of polyethylene stock shapes UHMWPE rods and UHMWPE rollers, and kinds of UHMWPE sheets. Often described as the world's toughest polymer, UHMWPE is characterized by its toughness, chemical resistance, low coefficient of friction, near-zero moisture absorption, and ease of processing. Compared to other solid thermoplastics, it is quite lightweight and will float in water. Most importantly, UHMWPE is self-lubricating and has the highest impact and abrasion resistance of any thermoplastic.

Why use UHMWPE?

Because it's a tough material that can take a real beating. Our sales team can confirm that UHMWPE is the right material for your job when you call. As a cost-effective material, it can produce high-quality parts at a low cost. Some say it is better than steel 6:1, up to 10:1 grade (depending on the application).

The unique properties of UHMWPE include high impact/wear resistance, self-lubrication, long wear life, and ease of processing, making it ideal for this application. Wear strips and components are resistant to corrosion and chemicals and are able to protect moving parts from external grease and lubricants. UHMWPE wear strips and components are commonly used with bearings, slides, gears, cams, bushings, and rollers.

What are the main advantages and characteristics of UHMWPE?

✅ Wear-resistant - more durable than steel in the right application

✅ Resistance to impact and stress cracking

✅ Low coefficient of friction - reduces power consumption

✅ No notch sensitivity - will not crack easily from corners

✅ Chemically resistant to many compounds

✅ Insulator - helps to reduce noise from impacts

✅ Does not absorb moisture - will not rot or smell

✅ High impact strength

✅ Non-toxic/non-hazardous

Applications of UHMWPE Wear Strips

UHMWPE wear strips are used to support and guide roller chains, products, and conveyor belts with high wear resistance and low coefficient of friction. They are designed to prevent chain or belt movement and reduce vibrations that can increase the load on bearings and motors. They can also provide wear bending and are often used to guide conveyor belts around corner tracks.

Abosn has a wide variety of materials for wear strips and components, including UHMWPE in a variety of thicknesses and sheet sizes, and the team at Abosn knows all of our products and can help you select the best material for your project. For more challenging applications where standard materials just won't do, our team of experts will work closely with you to find the best solution.  If you want to get more information about the UHMWPE for sale, welcome to contact us today or request a quote.
